what would happen if, one night, God changed the order of the stars so that they spelled, 'I exist.'
"In a memorable sermon, Frederick Beuchner once pondered what would happen if, one night, God changed the order of the stars so that they spelled, 'I exist.' Buechner claims if such a thing happened, there would probably be a great turning toward God. Churches would fill up, agnostics would become believers, atheists would be shaken.
"But after a while the novelty would wear off. Scientists would explain the phenomenon naturalistically. Philosophers would debate to whom I referred. Linguists would analyze the verb exist until no one was sure what it meant, either. Atheists would eventually calim they saw nothing whatsoever in the night sky--it's just a bunch of stars; so what? The words 'I exist' eventually would become just another constellation in the night sky, making no more of an impression than does the Big Dipper.
"Buechners' point is that you need a special set of eyes to behold the presence of our loving Creator God." (Hoezee, Remember Creation, p. 51)
